Cancer Support Group –
“It's hard to write about the ‘Center’ as a thing, because to me the ‘Center’ has always been the ‘People.' Whether we met in some deserted portion of the old Symmes Hospital, or the snug (but modern) new office, it didn't matter. We called it ‘Arms Around Arlington’ then, and now it's ‘The Center for Cancer for Support & Education,' none of that really matters. What matters is that when I was going through an especially rough time in my life, these people were there for me -- welcoming, supportive, and smart. Yes, I got tangible help for serious questions. Some of the stuff that medical doctors are loathe to tell you; and a supportive group of people who had a common bond, who are interested in the little details of life after cancer that you can’t tell just anyone. Because you can't really understand it until you've been there.
“I was walking down Massachusetts Avenue one day, during one of the Arlington Town Days, and there they were. They took an immediate interest in me and my issues. They were always there for me, and I will never forget that. Since that time I got better, and my life has resumed it's old hectic pace. Now I don't have as much time to give back to the Center. While I feel badly about that sometimes, I know that they have accomplished their mission... which was to help me get back on my feet. And so I am.” Jon, Arlington Heights.
"I wanted to thank you and members of the group for all of your help and support through some pretty difficult times. Unfortunately, with my job in Andover, all of my boys activities and (thankfully) because I'm doing better physically, it doesn't look like I'll be able to continue to go to Group Meetings. I wish you all the very best and I hope that you will keep me on a distribution list for news from your Center. I am doing better physically and am still waiting out some of these Chemo-brain issues and assuming that things will get better with time. "There is no replacement for sharing your experience with others that have stood in your shoes and I am very grateful to have met you and the members of your group. You make a difference in the life of others and give an opportunity to talk about things to those that might not talk about things otherwise. Thanks you very much!" Peter Childs, Lexington Wellness Program –
“The Relaxation classes are enjoyable. I feel the benefits of learning skills that slow down my active mind and relax me all over…especially my feet when we practice Reflexology.” Miriam, Arlington
