Why an advanced cancer support group?
When a person is diagnosed with cancer, life is changed forever. When the diagnosis indicates an advanced disease, or there is a spread of the disease after a period of time, special issues arise for the individual with cancer and those who love him/her. Basic questions of identity arise anew: who you were before, who you are now, and who you will become as the illness halts or progresses. All involved may begin to feel that they have lost control of their own life.
And one wonders: What matters most to me right now? And how do I manage the fear I feel?
Trying to manage pain, function, possible depression, and fears of what may occur next can become overwhelming and isolating.
The challenge is to continue to find purpose, connection and meaning
in a life that is always threatened.
Where can you share these feelings and experiences when you and everyone around you are paralyzed with fear and feelings of powerlessness?
There is a place. . .The Center for Cancer Support & Education.
